Electric or hydraulic brakes?

In Canada, electric brakes are required for trailers over 1400 kg (3000 lb). They're controlled from the tow vehicle via a brake controller. Hydraulic surge brakes are a simple alternative for marine trailers but less precise. For heavy loads (5000+ lbs), electric is the only safe option.
